A volunteer project that I took on as part of the IT4Communities scheme at the start of 2004. The National Phobics Society is the largest charity dealing with anxiety and phobias. They wanted a redesign of their existing site to reflect their new image. I worked with them to design and implemented a new site that reflected the growing importance of the internet to the charity.

The new site has been made to be as fully accessible as possible making full use of accessiblity aids such as accesskeys and includes the implementation of the BBC Betsie text parser.

Features also developed include:
  • A bulletin board and chatroom that was sourced and implemented
  • A custom administration system was written to handle media/research/e-contact/shop orders
  • Better handling of feedback and email support through the use of online forms
  • Improved site architecture and visibility of the core information areas
  • Integration of the WorldPay payment gateway for online shop and membership payments
Following the new site launch, traffic has increased four fold, online donations, membership applications and shop purchases have increased significantly. I continued to provide general site maintenance, support and advice to the NPS as a volunteer until the end of 2006.

Faculty of Applied Sciences department websites screenshots
For the Faculty of Applied Sciences I worked on the redevelopment of all the current sites in order to make them comply with current accessibility guidelines. Working closely with the five departments and centre I created CSS based designs and implementated the sites to XHTML standards in order to future proof them. Most sites are templated, some database driven and are usability tested.

I also provided advice for online faculty marketing and some general university Web strategies.

Educational institutions have different needs to commercial organisations in their focus and market making this role more of a challenge.

This Room Of Wonder Project

Museum of Costume Online collection screen shot
At the end of 2002 I took a career break, returning to study for a Postgraduate Diploma in Interactive Multimedia at the Bath School of Art & Design. The main reason for doing so was to build upon my existing creative knowledge and have a more balanced set of technical and design skills.

On the course I built up knowledge and expertise in the following areas:
  • Screen design, typography
  • Usability
  • Flash MX
  • Director 8.5
  • Sound and video editing
There was a major group project for the Museum of Costume in Bath, a personal project based on the idea of using a room as a wunderkammer and a dissertation on the weblog phenomenon. Two of my projects were showcased at the Submerge 2003 exhibition in Bristol.
